I’m running out of ways to describe how pants this competition is and we’re still only approaching the quarter final stage.
The UEFA Cup, yesterday
Aalborg 2 – 0 Manchester City (Penalties 3-4 ) (Agg 2-2)
Seamus Given was the hero in the penalty shoot-out claiming two saves to send City through to the quarter-finals. Manchester City made it through, though they made life hard for themselves against a side they should have pummelled. As Simon Burnton notes:
‘Basically they’re a half-decent side, with a strong streak of total moronicness built in. They were lucky, in the end, to get away with this, but their European adventure continues.’
Galatasaray 2 – Hamburg 3 (Agg. 3-4)
Gutted, I am. I was really looking forward to a trip to the Fenerbahçe stadium to watch their greatest rivals lift the cup (I only live just down the road). Galatasaray had this one in palm of their hands after taking the lead five minutes before half time when Liverpool legend Harry Kewell converted a penalty when Liverpool legend Milan Baros was brought down by Boateng. Five minutes after the break, Baros chipped in the second after a great through ball from young Arda Turan. Everything looked to be going well until the tie was turned on its head after two goals in three minutes from Paolo Guerrero. Ivica Olic wrapped up the tie in the 90th minute, the bugger.
Goals here.
If you really must…
Braga 0 – 1 PSG 1 (Agg. 0-1)
Shakhtar Donetsk 2 – 0 CSKA Moscow (Agg. 3-1)
Zenit St. Petersburg 1 – 0 Udinese (Agg. 1-2)
Metalist Kharkiv 3 – 2 Dynamo Kiev (away goals) (Agg. 3-3)
