Tim Howard saved two United penalties in the shoot-out to put Everton into the final against Chelsea, as Ferguson‘s rotation gamble failed to pay off. Everton were lucky that a Joleon Lescott deflection from a Danny Welbeck shot went narrowly past the Toffees’ post early on, for what was just about the highlight of the first half. In the second half, Tim Cahill forced a decent save out of Ben Foster with a long-range effort. At the other end Darron Gibson reciprocated, forcing Howard into a save with yet another shot from distance. The game went to extra time and then penalties, where Berbatov and Ferdinand both missed, Phil Jagielka proving the Everton hero slotting home winning penalty. No quintuple for United this season.
