La Liga 1989-90: When Real Madrid rewrote the scoring record books

Barcelona may be set to surpass the record goal haul this season, needing five in their remaining three games, but, much as I loath to ever praise the buggers in white, that shouldn’t diminish the achievement of big John Toshack’s 1989-90 Real Madrid team.

In La Liga only on three occasions has a team broke the 100-goal barrier: Barcelona this season, of course, but the other two instances were, amazingly, under British management. Bobby Robson’s Ronaldo-fueled Barça scored 102 goals in 42 games in 1996-97, while John Toshack’s Real Madrid managed a mind-boggling 107 in 38 games in the 1989-90 season. Here they are…
