This little beauty comes from Panini’s 1997 showcase. First, some fascinating background info. Panini’s arch rivals Merlin became the official sticker publishers for ye olde English First Division the year before the Premier League was formed (1991-92). Thus unable to depict team kits for fear of all kinds of money related issues (Merlin would have sude them), Panini had to make do with players in crappy unofficial tracksuits bearing the logo of their union, the PFA, who sponsored the collection, on the cheap no doubt. Worst still, if that’s possible, with team logos also prohibited, the album was organised on an A to Z basis rather than club by club. Lost in the middle of this was a young man who was to make something of an impact in the ensuing years, after ditching the curtains haircut.
If it’s not too bloody obviouss, click here to end the pain.
