Premier League roundup

Here be the best and worst of the rest…

Middlesbrough 1 – 1 Aston Villa

Doomed I tells ya. Mighty Tuncay Şanlı had the Riverside on their feet after 14 minutes, the Turk scoring a wondrous overhead-volley to put Boro in front against Villa. Villa equalised early in the second half though, thanks to a very big John Carew strike through a crowd of players. The result leaves Boro all but relegated.

1-1

Newcastle 0 – 1 Fulham

Doomed I tells ya again. Alan Shearer and his bunc of jokers suffered further anguish as 10-man Newcastle slipped back into the relegation zone. In a moment to break Newcastle’s hearts, Erik Nevland hurtled down the Fulham right wing before finding Diomansy Kamara in the box who merely had the task of thrashing his shot high into the net. To make matters worse, Mak Larduka had a pretty decent goal ruled out for some reason I couldn’t fathom. Newcastle have slipped back into the relegation zone after Hull, whose fate is now in their own hands, gained a point at Bolton. Decent season for Fulham though, has to be said.

Stoke 2 – 0 Wigan

Two of the real teams of the season. Ricardo Fuller broke the deadlock after 69 minutes when he fired the ball past Wigan keeper Richard Kingson after the visitors failed to clear their lines, Fuller taking advantage of slack defending. James Beattie added the decisive goal after 76 minutes with a close range header from a Matthew Etherington cross.

More? Really?

Tottenham 2 – 1 Manchester City

The first half at White Hart Lane was all Tottenham, Spurs scoring midway through when Jermain Defoe converted a Tom Huddlestone cross. City, upped their game significantly after the break and levelled midway through the second half with Valeri Bojinov starting and finishing an excellent more. Spurs got a late winner though after a well dodgy penalty decision against Micah Richards that allowed Robbie Keane to score from the spot. The result was just about deserved, given Tottenham’s first-half domination, but it was rough justice for City, who had dragged themselves off the canvas to level through the substitute Valeri Bojinov in a rare decent away effort.

Everton 3 – 1 West Ham

Louis Saha scored twice and Joseph Yobo once as Everton climbed above Aston Villa into fifth place. West Ham made the perfect start when Radoslav Kovac gave them the lead, before Saha equalised with a penalty after Tim Cahill had been tripped by James Tomkins. That resulted in Tomkins being sent off and the visitors threw in the towel, Joseph Yobo putting Everton ahead and Saha sealing the deal.

Bolton 1 – 1 Hull

A monster, monster result for Hull. Phil Brown’s side have moved out of the bottom three thanks to Craig Fagan’s second-half equaliser. Gretar Steinsson gave Bolton the lead with a fine drive for his second goal of the season midway through the first half, but Craig Fagan came up with a vital equaliser a minute after the restart following a swift Hull counter-attack. The Tigers’ point means their fate is well and truly in their own hands going into the final game of the season against lowly Manchester United next Sunday. Is that Alan Shearer I see eyeing a quick return to MotD?
