Wolfsburg glory

Let me tell you, we would love it if this happened in England, we really would. Bugger all chance, though. Mighty Wolfsburg sealed their first German title with an emphatic win over the Uefa Cup runners-up, while Bayern win claimed second spot. Wolfsburg finished two points clear thanks to two goals from Grafite, one each from Zvjezdan Misimovic and Edin Dzeko, plus a Sebastien Prodl own goal.

Wolfsburg 5 – 1 Werder Bremen

Magic stuff. In Wolfsburg’s first attack the would be champs found the back of the net with midfield wizard Zvjezdan Misimovic walloping in the opener. Ten minutes later, Wolfsburg had doubled their advantage when leading Bundesliga scorer Grafite produced a neat flick from Gentner’s cross. The match and championship race appeared to be over after just 26 minutes, Grafite racing down the right before seeing Sebastian Prodl turn his cross into the Bremen net. Bremen were able to pull a goal back through the Juventus bound Diego who jinked his way into the box before slipping the ball in at the near post.

Wolfsburg restored their 3-goal cushion early in the second half when Grafite headed home a free-kick for his 28th of the season. Wolfsburg claimed their first ever championship with a fifth scored by the brilliant Edin Dzeko. What we wouldn’t give for a team to emulate them in England.

Bayern Munich 2 – 1 Stuttgart

Needing to win come what may, Bayern took the lead after Franck Ribery linked up with Podolski on the left before Khalid Boulahrouz eventually got the final touch. From a Ribery pass on the hour, Mark van Bommel slipped the ball between Jens Lehmann’s legs as Bayern looked to secure a second-place finish. Stuttgart came back into the match when a clumsy-looking run from Mario Gomez in the box ended when the striker smashed home a bullet high into the net.
