The Americans stunned the European champions to end their amazing 35-match unbeaten streak. In spite of the pre-match hype, it was the United States who made the early running, big Charlie Davies sending an overhead volley narrowly wide after only six minutes. Two minutes later Clint Dempsey then saw his shot drift just wide of Casillas’ upright. After 26 minutes, the Americans got their just reward for dominating the game, Dempsey freeing Jozy Altidore for the striker to race through on goal before rifling a low shot which Casillas found too hot to handle.
The Spanish stepped up the ante in the second half without finding the equaliser, and were made to pay when America doubled the lead after both Pique and Sergio Ramos failed to cut out a Donovan cross, Clint Dempsey claiming the unbelievable second.
