Confederations Cup thriller

Brazil 3-0 Italy

An unimaginative and ineffective Italy looked truly crap the first half against Brazil; when the floodgates opened the Samba Boys capitalised big time. Luis Fabiano picked up Maicon’s wayward shot and fired a low drive into Buffon’s far post to grab the opener after 37 minutes. Two minutes from the break Luis Fabiano applied the finishing touch to double Brazil’s lead from a Kaka cross, and Italy’s creaking defence were fully exposed when Andrea Dossena turned a third into the Azzurri’s net on the stroke of halftime.

Egypt 0-3 United States

United States struck their first of the evening after 22 minutes, big Charlie Davies getting onto a loose ball in the box, seeing his shot deflect into the net to break the deadlock. After the break it was the Americans who continued to press and they were rewarded when Michael Bradley scored after playing a neat one-two with Donovan. The US then claimed the crucial third that put them in the tentative driver’s seat for qualification, Bradley played the ball wide to Spector who controlled, swung a cross into Clint Dempsey, and the Fulham forward superbly headed the ball into the far corner.
