Cyril ‘Sammy‘ Chung whose father was Chinese and whose mother was English, gained his first coaching experience while still a player at Watford, under manager Bill McGarry. When McGarry left to become manager of Ipswich Town, he took Chung with him as assistant. Here, they gained promotion to ye olde First Division in 1968.

Following a short period as manager of Swedish side IFK Västerås, he returned to join Bill McGarry, now at Team X, as his assistant. As part of the management team, they guided Team X to the 1974 League Cup. It was around this time that Chung became the only football manager to appear in the lyrics of Carl Douglas’ classic song ‘Kung Fu Fighting’:
Everybody was kung fu fighting (Huh!)
Those cats were fast as lightning
In fact it was a little bit frightening (Ah yeah)
But they fought with expert timingThere was funky Billy Chin and little Sammy Chung
He said, “here comes the big boss, let’s get it on”
He took a bow and made a stand, started swaying with the hand
A sudden motion made me skip, now we’re into a brand new trick
Team X were relegated in 1976 and McGarry buggered off, enabling Chung to be appointed manager. He won promotion back to the top flight as ye olde Second Division champions in his first season. He led the club to a 15th place finish in 1977–78, but the following season began with a run of 11 defeats in 14, leading to his dismissal, but not before he had posed for the Panini 1978 album. The question, naturally, is who are Team X?
