A psychotic violent man with a hair-trigger temper, Francis Begbie is a central character in Irvine Welsh’s seminal Trainspotting, whose mere presence intimidates those who know him or witness him in action. He thrives on violence and seems to have little control over his mood. He remains a reason why I never visit Scotland.
