Celtic 5 – 2 St. Johnstone
Marc-Antoine Fortune and Shaun Maloney put Celtic into a 2-0 lead at home to St Johnstone, with Collin Samuel pulling one back before Celtic went goal crazy in the second half.
Barcelona 3 – 0 Athletic Bilbao (Agg. 5-1)
After a goalless first half in the second leg of the Spanish Super Cup, Barça really turned on the style, Lionel Messi scored a majestic opening, skinning his man and then chipping the keeper. Messi then bagged his brace from the penalty spot after Dani Alves had been fouled, then young Bojan Krkic took advantage of some poor defending.
Hoffenheim 0 – 0 Schalke
Schalke played a goalless draw at Hoffenheim to remain undefeated under new coach Felix Magath, despite a poor performance. Hoffenheim still haven’t won this season.
Bursaspor 1 – 0 Ankaragücü
The Bursaspor green crocodiles (really) moved up to third, Ömer Erdoğan scoring the only goal in the 25th minute.
Gençlerbirliği 0 – 0 Beşiktaş
Not good enough chaps, we have to start winning away from home.
Auxerre 0 – 3 Lyon
A brilliant near post flick from, er, Jean Alain Boumsong (!!!!!) and a second from Jean Makoun put Lyon in control at Auxerre. A back post volley from Miralem Pjanic sealed the win for OL.
Siena 1 – 2 AC Milan
Alexandre Pato fired AC Milan into the lead after being set up by a perfect through-ball from Ronaldinho, only for Siena to level before the break when Abdelkader Ghezzal brought the hosts level. The Rossoneri claimed an opening day win courtesy of Alexandre Pato’s second in the second half.
Bologna 1 – 1 Fiorentina
Bologna striker Pablo Daniel Osvaldo saw his corner kick sail into the Fiorentina far post as the hosts took a first half lead. The Viola drew level midway through the second half as Adrian Mutu struck the leveller with a rocket into the roof of the net.
Mainz 2 – 1 Bayern Munich
Mainz took a two-goal lead into the break at home to Bayern Munich thanks to Andreas Ivanschitz and Aristide Bance. An og from Nikolce Noveski at the start of the second half brought Louis van Gaal’s side back into the match.
Borussia Dortmund 1 – 1 Stuttgart
Nelson Valdez put Dortmund into the lead, with Georg Niedermeier equalising for the away side.
Wolfsburg 2 – 4 Hamburg
Bugger. The Hamburgers stormed into a third minute lead at Wolfsburg as Guerrero’s shot rebounded off the post, onto the head of Wolves’ keeper Benaglio and into the net. After seven minutes it was 2-0 to when Eljero Elia barged his way through the backline to bag number two. Wolfsburg rallied after the break, Zvjezdan Misimovic and new boy Obafemi Martins bringing the VW boys back level, but a 75th minute goal from Mladen Petric and a last-gasp fourth from Romeo Castelen sent the points back with Hamburg.
Galatasaray 4 – 1 Kayserispor
That man Milan Baros scored a brace for cimbom, while Man City reject Elano opened his account for the with a stunning half-volley from 25-yards.
Inter Milan 1 – 1 Bari
The Serie A bully boys faltered at home against lowly Bari. Samuel Eto’o, on his Inter debut in Serie A, almost broke his deadlock inside the opening minutes, then Maicon saw a powerful shot saved after the half hour. Inter then won a penalty early in the second half and Samuel Eto’o finally opened his account from the spot. Eto’o should then have made it two but dragged his shot narrowly wide. That miss proved costly as Bari, who had barely threatened up to that point, all too easily found space in Inter’s defence and Vitali Kutuzov equalised.
Juventus 1 – 0 Chievo
A powerful header from Vincenzo Iaquinta handed Juve the points against Chievo.
