Post-hooligans Carling Cup highlights

Who can stop the boys from White Hart lane? Not the lads from Wigan, that’s for sure, although maybe Newcastle might be getting a chance sooner than I thought.

Crystal Palace 0 – 2 Manchester City

The team that cost 200 million quid needed second half goals from Shaun Wright-Phillips and Carlos Tevez to put them into the next round of the cup.

Doncaster 1 – 5 Tottenham

Tottenham took full control with goals from young Tom Huddlestone, Jamie O’Hara and big Peter Crouch. After the break David Bentley (!) extended the lead, Martin Woods pulling one back for Doncaster from the penalty spot, but Roman Pavlyuchenko (!!) responded with the fifth.

Blackpool 4 – 1 Wigan

Roberto Martinez’s baptism of fire continued as his much-changed side were ripped apart by the Championship team Blackpool. Ishmel Demontagnac set Blackpool on their way with his first goal for the club on three minutes, Ben Burgess adding a second on 19 minutes before Charlie Adam got in on the act on 33 minutes when he scored from a rebound after his penalty was saved by Mike Pollitt. Substitute Gary Taylor-Fletcher added a fourth for Blackpool on 67 minutes before debutant Antonio Amaya grabbed a last-minute consolation for poor Wigan.

Newcastle 4 – 3 Huddersfield

What a humdinger! That lad Danny Guthrie gave Newcastle the lead on 36 minutes, but a quickfire brace from Theo Robinson, the second from the penalty spot, turned the game on its head. Jordan Rhodes added a third two minutes after the break, but Geremi reduced the arrears a mere 60 seconds later. Shola Ameobi drew Newcastle level from the penalty spot on 64 minutes and Kevin Nolan popped up with the winner six minutes from time to consign former Magpies star Lee Clark to defeat on his return to Tyneside.

Leyton Orient 0 – 1 Stoke (AET)

Stoke took their time, making real work of it, needing extra time to beat League One team Leyton Orient with Dave Kitson’s first goal for the club giving the Premier League side a 1-0 win.

West Brom 4 – 3 Rotherham

Craig Beattie fired West Brom in front after just ten minutes with a free kick that no one touched on its way to goal, only for Michael Cummins to draw Rotherham level on 29 minutes. Graham Dorrans restored West Brom’s lead six minutes into the second half, but big Tom Pope forced the game into extra time with a 52nd minute leveller. That lad Pope then gave Rotherham the lead for the first time in the game eight minutes into extra time, but Beattie responded with his second of the night three minutes later. Cox then grabbed the winner for the Baggies with his first goal for the club four minutes from the end of extra time.

Nottingham Forest 2 – 1 Middlesbrough (AET)

Adam Johnson’s shot gave Boro a 43rd minute lead, but Luke Chambers levelled after the break, with Radoslaw Majewski sending Forest through with an extra-time winner.

Tranmere 0 – 1 Bolton

Mark Davies bagged his first goal for Bolton and the team’s first of the season as the Premier League outfit reached the Carling Cup third round.
