This weekend in the Premier League as it happened in the past

Here, in what may become a regular thing on the blog if I can be arsed, is a walk down memory lane ‘Prem League‘ style, which may prove particularly painful for them there Goonerz:

2001: Man Utd 6 – 1 Arsenal

The game is bound to be seen as a test of Arsenal’s credentials for their bid for the Premier League title. It must also be regarded, however, as an examination of Manchester United without Cristiano Ronaldo, the weaknesses in the line-up have become more noticeable, despite the 5-0 rout of Wigan. They will hope for a repeat of 2001. United 1 up, then Arsenal equalize, then it becomes the Igors Stepanovs show. Stepanovs became a Utd legend that day on the strength of this performance. I should point out that he wasn’t actually playing for United, but rather Arsenal, although not for much longer.

2004: Liverpool 2 – 3 Bolton

Today, the focus will be very much on Liverpool’s reaction to losing twice in three games but Gary Megson’s predicament cannot be overlooked. ‘Megson, Megson, give us a wave‘ chanted Bolton supporters at Tranmere on Tuesday, only to boo their manager when he obliged. Way back in 2004, Bolton claimed a famous victory in the ever popular League Cup on their way to the final, which they would lose to Boro.
