Leicester who? That’s right, Leicester Fosse was Leicester City’s name from 1884 to 1919:
The name “Fosse” comes from the Roman Fosse Way that runs through Leicester. When the club started, they played near the Fosse Way. In 1919, Leicester Fosse went bankrupt, were taken over but a new group and renamed “City” to celebrate Leicester earning City status that year.
This particular match was a first round FA Cup tie, although there was no giant killing act on this particular occasion. Leicester Fosse were at the time a second division outfit, although they would be promoted that year in 2nd place behind the mighty Bradford City. Sunderland were a pretty handy team during this period, although they would finish a lowly 16th in a First Division contested by 20 teams, with pesky upstarts Manchester United breaking their duck in winning the championship for the first time.
‘More fans there in 1907 for a cup tie than there would be today 102 years later,’ laments Puckpassion, while kristiaaaan ironically adds, ‘I see Leicester Fosse were 0-3 down at half time. Nothing like Leicester City then.’
