Everton were condemned to their worst league start for more than a decade (download) by an Aston Villa side who were lucky to keep the visitors at bay at Villa Park. The hosts took an early lead when Ashley Young freed marauding full-back Luke Young for a fine left-foot finish.

Everton failed to press home their advantage, allowing Sylvan Ebanks-Blake to grab a draw for Wolves at Goodison Park. Wolves’ last win away at Everton came in 1979 when Andy Gray netted on his debut for the Midlands side. They another year to wait at least.
